ĐÁNH GIÁ DELL XPS 13 2015 - DELL XPS 13 (EARLY 2015) NOTEBOOK REVIEW

Taking a hint from TV-makers, the bezel narrows lớn nearly nothing, while performance gets a small Broadwell boost.

It takes a lot khổng lồ move the needle on máy vi tính design. Hybrids have proved inventive over the past few years, with Yoga-style systems và the slick Surface Pro line redefining what a portable PC can look like. But for clamshells that don"t swivel or twist, the flagship design may still be Apple"s Mac
Book Air, which is already several years old.

Dell"s revamped XPS 13 has a nearly borderless display và a very small body toàn thân for a 13-inch laptop, plus the latest intel CPUs.
Upgrades can get expensive; a touchscreen isn"t included by default; the boost from the new CPU is minimal.
This new Dell XPS 13 is the first great máy tính of 2015, but it owes that title more to a smart thiết kế revamp than Intel"s new processors.
Dell now steps lớn the forefront with a laptop design tweak that feels so obvious, it"s a wonder we haven"t seen it before. Taking a cue from the past few generations of television design, the screen bezel, the outer border of glass và aluminum that surrounds the display, has been reduced khổng lồ mere millimeters. Dell calls it the infinity display, and describes it as "virtually borderless."

It"s not truly borderless (a development I"m sure is not too far off), but the difference between this và the previous-generation XPS 13 is striking, and the same can be said comparing this to lớn any other high-end 13-inch máy tính or hybrid, from the Mac
Book Air lớn the Yoga 3 Pro . This allows the chassis khổng lồ be smaller than other 13-inch laptops, fitting a 13-inch display into the same body toàn thân size as an 11 or 12-inch laptop.

At the same time, this is an important máy tính for more reasons than just the thin display bezel. This is the first máy vi tính we"ve tested with one of Intel"s new fifth-generation bộ vi xử lý core i-series CPUs, also known by the codename Broadwell. The new vi xử lý core i3/i5/i7 processors are just hitting systems in early 2015, & will be found in most new PCs going forward.

The new Dell XPS 13 starts at $799 in the US, £799 in the UK and AU$1,499 in Australia, which gets you some decidedly entry màn chơi (but still decent) specs, as outlined below.

Sarah Tew/CNET

Our đánh giá model trades up from the entry-level bộ vi xử lý core i3 CPU & 128GB SSD flash drive configuration lớn a core i5 & 256GB SSD respectively. Just as notably, the 1080p non-touch display in the $799 mã sản phẩm has been replaced with a 3,200x1,800 touchscreen one, all for a total price of $1,399 (£1,099 in the UK or AU$2,099 in Australia). Premium territory lớn be sure, but the low starting price for the same excellent build chất lượng and design makes it tempting for mid-price shoppers.

The latest intel processor performs fine in its first time out, with decent battery life và speed, but it"s not blowing any systems with last-gen CPUs out of the water. It"s not the quantum leap you might be expecting from Intel"s kinh doanh hype -- maybe it"ll get better as Microsoft and software makers optimize for it -- but it"s a far sight better than the low-voltage chip core M Broadwell chip we kiểm tra drove late in 2014. That one, designed for super-slim laptops and tablets, didn"t live up to lớn our performance or battery life expectations.

If you gauge performance & battery expectations accordingly, there"s little to lớn nothing with which to lớn be disappointed, và quite a lot to lớn love. You"ll be looking at the new XPS 13 because it packs a big screen into a small body, and, operating system aside, is almost what most people would think of as their ideal Mac
Book Air redesign. So long as you invest in the worthwhile CPU, screen & storage upgrades -- we"d recommend something close to our $1,400 reviews config -- the Dell XPS 13 is the first great máy tính xách tay of 2015.

Design và features

At first glance, this XPS 13 doesn"t look all that much different than previous versions. The last version we looked at was in early 2014, & both that mã sản phẩm and this one have a similar flat silver/aluminum top lid, with gently rounded corners và a circular logo sản phẩm stamped right in the center. We jokingly called the older XPS the Dell
Book Air, and the comparison is still apt, even if this version is closer khổng lồ the 11-inch Air in overall footprint.

Side by side with a 13-inch Mac
Book Air, the difference is striking, the Air"s thick bezel standing out lượt thích a sore thumb. Dead space surrounds the Mac
Book"s keyboard, at least compared to the tightly packed interior here. This is much closer in physical footprint to the 11-inch version of the Mac
Book Air, and while most of the interesting new designs of late have involved hybrids that flip or fold into tablets, this is a rare case of a forward-looking kiến thiết built firmly around the idea of a clamshell laptop.

While the outer surface is matte aluminum, the inside is basic black, with a subtle dark pattern over the wrist rest and black keys phối into a black keyboard tray. The keys are backlit, which is a welcome bonus is a system this thin and small. While on the shallow side, the island-style keys are responsive & well-spaced for touch typing. Media functions on the F-key row are reversed, which means you can adjust the volume và screen brightness without having to hold down the Fn key.

The large clickpad-style touchpad is similar lớn what we"ve seen on recent high-end Dell systems. It works fine for basic navigating và tapping or clicking, but I found the all-important two-finger scroll to lớn be less smooth than I"d like (or not as smooth as one would expect from a Mac
Book). Navigating up and down long websites often sent me to the touchscreen to flick my way through, but if you go for one of the less expensive non-touch configurations, you"re out of luck.

Sarah Tew/CNET

The 13.3-inch display is the first thing you notice about the XPS 13, largely because of its nearly borderless edge-to-edge design. The screen in our chạy thử system is the higher-end of two options, a 3,200x1,800 cảm biến panel, versus a 1,920x1,080 non-touch version in the sub-$1,000 configurations. The higher-end version looks clear & bright, with excellent off-axis viewing angles, and the better-than-1080 resolution means you likely won"t see individual pixels or a screen door effect no matter how close to the screen you get.

Other 13-inch laptops have jumped lớn this resolution, notably Lenovo"s Yoga Pro line, và some 15-inch screens are now full 4K 3,840x2,160. These higher resolutions are overkill for most users, and can hit both performance và battery life, but they can also be very useful for photo and clip editing, or just khổng lồ maximize screen real estate. Many common apps, and Windows 8 itself, scale well lớn the higher resolution.

Sarah Tew/CNET

I have not tried the 1080p non-touch version, and for $799, one could certainly make a case that losing cảm biến is a worthwhile tradeoff. But when navigating Windows 8, I always find myself reaching for the screen at least a few times per session, so skip the cảm biến at your own peril.

Interestingly, the thin bezel means there"s no room for a webcam on the top edge of the screen. Instead, the camera moves khổng lồ the lower left side, below the screen. In Skype tests, it worked fine, but the subject is shot in a nearly up-the-nose angle, & you"re more likely to see the ceiling than the wall behind you.

Connections, performance & battery

With a body toàn thân this small, some ports và connections are simply going to have lớn go. Here you get a mini-Display
Port connection, two USB 3.0, & audio và SD thẻ ports. No HDMI, no Ethernet. You do, however, get something I think more laptops need, which is a battery meter on the left side, although the button you press to lớn turn it on is too recessed and hard khổng lồ hit.

Dell sent us a few optional accessories, which may cosplay for some of the omissions. The $59, AU$89 port adaptor is a small square box that connects via a built-in USB cable, & offers an HDMI output, Ethernet jack, card đồ họa output, và one USB 2.0 port. The $107, AU$169 portable nguồn companion is a USB-tethered 12,000m
Ah battery pack that looks & feels like a small portable hard drive.

This is our first opportunity to kiểm tra one of Intel"s new Broadwell vi xử lý core i5 CPUs, which are the fifth generation of core i-series chips. We"ve previously only tested the new core M variant, which is a Broadwell chip for thinner, lighter, tablets, laptops, and hybrids, as featured in the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro in late 2014. We liked that the bộ vi xử lý core M allowed for inventive fanless designs, but it certainly felt more sluggish for everyday work tasks than a standard core i5 would.

In this case, the Dell XPS 13 uses the new 2.2GHz vi xử lý core i5-5200U. We compared it with with other 12- & 13-inch systems with năm trước Core i5 CPUs & found the Dell XPS 13 slightly outperformed the competition in our challenging multitasking test, & was highly competitive in single-app tests. There wasn"t a huge overall difference between this & other standard fourth-generation Intel chip core i5 CPUs, such as the one found in the Surface Pro 3 , but it was significantly faster than both the new core M và an ultra-low-voltage Y-series vi xử lý core i5 from 2014.

None of this is surprising, as hãng sản xuất intel hasn"t promised a radical performance (or battery life) boost from the new CPUs, just a steady evolution. In hands-on use, the XPS 13 felt fast & responsive, and definitely easier to use than the chip core M Yoga 3 Pro. For nearly any mainstream task, from Office docs to HD clip streaming to lớn basic photo and video clip editing, this is more than enough power.

Sarah Tew/CNET

The latest version of Intel"s integrated graphics is called HD 5500, and like previous versions, its not really meant for mainstream PC gaming. Many older games should work fine, but even scaling down the resolution down lớn 1,920x1,080, the XPS 13 ran Bioshock: Infinite at 13 frames per second, và Tomb Raider at 12.1 frames per second. That"s at high detail settings for both, so dialing that down should yield better results.

Battery life was decent, if not at the same cấp độ as the ever-popular 13-inch Mac
Book Air. The XPS 13 ran for 7:02 in our đoạn clip playback battery drain test, which was nearly the same as the Surface Pro 3 or the 13-inch HP Spectre X2, và nearly 90 minutes better than the Yoga 3 Pro. The lower-end version of the XPS 13, with a vi xử lý core i3 CPU and lower-res 1,920x1,080 screen, may vày even better.

Conclusion

For this nearly bezel-less design, the starting price of $799 is an excellent value, although you"re very likely going to lớn want lớn trade up to the better chip core i5 CPU and the higher-resolution touchscreen, which puts this in the same territory as a premium system lượt thích the 13-inch Mac
Book Pro.

Dell"s revamped XPS 13 was one of the standout products at the năm ngoái Consumer Electronics Show, và in real life, it"s practical và easy lớn use, even beyond the smart-looking redesign. While it would have been pleasing to lớn see a bigger boost from Intel"s new processors, it"s nice lớn start the year with a high-quality máy tính I can recommend nearly without reservation.

Simply brilliant. Dell now offers the XPS 13 with a non-touch display và a more mainstream resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels for a much more affordable price. Not only is the new display brighter, but it"s matte as well, which improves outdoor usability. The remainder of the hardware is very similar khổng lồ the QHD+ version, so the new model inherits both its strengths và weaknesses.

Not two months ago, we reviewed the Dell XPS 13-9343 Touchscreen Ultrabook, which comes - at least in our opinion - very close khổng lồ what the ideal Ultrabook should look like. Its build unique is impeccable, the performance more than adequate, and the bright touchscreen features a novel near borderless design, which in turn makes the XPS 13 the smallest 13.3-inch offering lớn date (see below for a comparison of footprints). Not everybody needs the super-high QHD+ resolution và the touchscreen this model features - in particular in light of the rather hefty $1300 starting point. Enter the Dell XPS 13-9343 Non-Touch, which sells for only $900 when equipped with the same i5-processor, identically-sized SSD, but 4 GB instead of 8 GB of RAM. At the time of writing, Dell offers three different non-touch models, starting with an chip core i3-equipped version with 4 GB of RAM offered at $800 & ending with a chip core i5-model with 8 GB of RAM selling for $1000. Only the touchscreen version is offered with a faster core i7 CPU and a more substantial 256 GB SSD standard, however.

Since the chassis and therefore the port selection, the keyboard và the touchpad, as well as the accessories are identical to lớn the version we"ve already evaluated, we"ve omitted these sections. At 1184 g, the non-touch XPS 13 is about 7 % lighter than the touchscreen sibling, which tipped the scales at 1276 g. The ultra-narrow bezel measurs 5 mm on the sides và the top
The big news, of course, is the new display offering và the subsequently much lower starting price of the versions equipped with it. Dell opted khổng lồ use a matte IPS
non-touch panel courtesy of Sharp (model SHP1420) with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. Just lượt thích the previously reviewed version, the new mã sản phẩm features an ultra-thin 5mm bezel, which Dell calls "Infinity Display". A potential drawback of the thiết kế is the fact that the webcam is located on the lower left bottom edge, which tends khổng lồ display the face of the userat a not-so-ideal upward angle to video-chat partners.

Just looking at the price difference, one might assume that the new display is of much lesser quality, but fortunately, that"s not the case at all. The new display is anything but low-end và looks, in our opinion, quite stunning.

Our measurements reveal that the new screen is not only brighter at 405 nits compared khổng lồ the touch version at around 370 nits, but the brightness distribution of 93 % is much better as well. The panel looks completely uniform lớn the naked eye, although there is some very minor display bleed at the upper edge. We are being nitpicky here, since this display bleed doesn"t even extend a millimeter or so downwards from the bezel và extends the entire width, so it"s really only noticeable when looking at a completely đen background with the screen brightness turned all the way up. Speaking of black: thanks lớn a fairly low đen value of 0.366cd/m², the contrast ratio is also quite good - although short of great - at 1119:1. The cảm biến version managed over 2000:1, which leads to lớn even darker blacks. Still, the XPS 13 Non-Touch holds its own against competitors lượt thích the
Yoga 3 Pro, which only managed khổng lồ reach 360:1. Watching movies is definitely a pleasurable experience.

With s
RGB và Adobe
RGB98 coverages of 81 % & 60 %, respectively, the display panel is not really suitable for serious photography work. The business-oriented 12.5-inch Dell Latitude E7240 cảm biến fares much worse however & only covers about 43 % of Adobe
RGB.
